Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation

The Sparkassen were set up in Germany over 200 years ago as microfinance institutions for low-income earners. Since then, they have grown into one of the largest financial groups in the world – one that successfully combines outstanding professionalism with a strong social mandate. The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe comprises in addition to the Sparkassen also regional banks, regional building societies, insurance companies and numerous other financial service providers and therefore can rely on a large network of experts from various fields. Its umbrella organization is the Deutsche Sparkassen- and Giroverband (DSGV – German Savings Banks Association).

Being an extremely successful provider of professional, yet affordable financial services, the Sparkassen model attracted the attention of banks and Governments around the globe. In the 1960-ies, when many countries around the world gained their independence, the first international cooperation agreements were signed. After the fall of the iron curtain and the break-up of the Soviet Union, Central and Eastern European countries increasingly requested support in financial sector development. The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe responded to this international demand for its expertise and experience by founding the Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation in 1992.

Since that time, the Sparkassenstiftung is actively supporting financial institutions, promoting a sustainable economic and social development at local, regional and national level by enabling its partner institutions to offer banking services that are tailored to the needs of the target groups. German and international experts advise partners in more than 50 countries on topics such as financial literacy and consumer protection, triple bottom line banking, capacity development, small and medium enterprise finance and others.
